Parkchester: A City Within a City The Parkchester development is a planned community, begun in the 1930s by the Metropolitan Insurance Company. The idea succeeded and, today, it is still a wonderful place in which to live and raise your children. The apartments are spacious and the infrastructure has been upgraded by the new owners. The rent is very affordable and within the means of the middle class adult and family. Rentals in the Parkchester development start at $755 for 1 bedroom, $950 for 2 bedrooms. Also, condos are available from their owners at attractive prices. Living in Parkchester means you do not have to leave the community for anything. There is a central business district with a Macy's department store, a multiplex movie house showing current films, Dress Barn, Payless Shoe Source, Starbucks, and our own Post Office (with our own Zip Code -- 10462). Restaurants, banks, medical and dental services, supermarkets, and even a Regional Branch Library are located here. (For more information, try the unofficial Parkchester information site.) Add to that, the transportation to Manhattan is convenient via the #6 Pelham Bay subway (get off at the Parkchester stop, of course!) and express buses run by the New York Bus Service. There are also buses from Parkchester to other areas of the Bronx and Queens, and transportation to Westchester County is easily available. Throughout the development, there are large green grass areas, trees, benches, and playgrounds. There is an extensive recreation program and the local public elementary school, P.S. 106, is within easy walking distance. The area is compact, beautiful, peaceful and provides an excellent quality of life, all within the means of the average working person or family. Temple Emanuel has been the center
